Some middle-aged guy on the Internet. Seen a lot of it, occasionally regurgitating it, trying to be amusing and informative.

Lurked Digg until v4. Commented on Reddit (same username) until it went full Musk.

Was on kbin.social (dying/dead) and kbin.run (mysteriously vanished). Now here on fedia.io.

Really hoping he hasn’t brought the jinx with him.

  • Package version 0.01: Built with libraries abc version 2, def version 0.1 and ghi version 7.2.2

Your system has requirements: abc version 2, def version 0.2 and ghi version 8.0.0

Package version 0.02: Requires abc version 3, def version 0.2 and ghi version 8.0.1

You realise that those differences in version would mean that you would have to basically recompile (then debug and recompile) your entire operating system with the three upgraded packages, and deal with a full cascade of dependencies, not just the package you really want to compile, OR basically sit down and rewrite Package 0.02 from the ground up using older libraries than it was originally written for.

You decide to make do with the old version of the package.

  • Bringing “no garden” back out of the analogy equates to no computer at all. The fountain is all the crapware and spyware shovelled into Windows these days. The billboard is the ads they want inject into everything.

The alternative is Apple. They don’t want to install a billboard just yet, and there’s no obvious fountain, but there’s a nightmare HOA who tell you how you have to live and if you don’t live their way you have to move.

  • Here’s an analogy: You can do your own gardening, or you can hire one of the two landscaping services in town.

This sounds great, but these days, no matter who you hire, the people who show up 1) want to install a fountain and an advertisement billboard that will run off your water and electricity supply and 2) want the right to take what they like from your house by default, they’ll mysteriously “forget” and do it anyway even if you pay them not to.

Furthermore, with their latest package, one of the landscaping companies are basically saying that if you don’t have a yard large enough for their fountain, you have to move house, which is only marginally better than the other one who will only work on gardens for houses they sold in the first place.

(A previous version of this comment involved the word “lube”. I’m sure you can imagine the rest.)

  • 99% of people want a drop-in replacement for Windows that will install and run every possible Windows-compatible application, game and device without them having to make any extra effort or learn anything new. Basically Windows but free (in all senses).

Any even slightly subtle difference or incompatibility and they’ll balk. Linux can never be that, and Microsoft will keep the goalposts moving anyway to be sure of it.

Sure, a lot more works and is more user friendly than 15 years ago, but most people won’t make the time to sit down and deal with something new unless it’s forced on them… which is what Microsoft are doing with Win11.

  • Any conclusions drawn from a child’s personality can’t necessarily then be applied to a parent. Hannah Montana Linux was ultimately a Debian, but it was so far from stock Debian that the comparison makes no sense. The same, I assume, applies with the Arch-derivative that runs on Steam decks. We’re not in Arch-kansas any more, Toto.

The closest to “Windows with nerdnip” is probably Linux Mint, but even then that’s a fairly unkind comparison.

    I use LMDE, btw.

  • The Fediverse is also a sewer of both overt and covert Antisemitism

Is this a problem unique to the Fediverse, or is this a case that it’s more rampant here? Or does it only seem like it?

My feeds are fairly well curated, or perhaps you might say “blinkered”, so I don’t see a lot of it. Or maybe I don’t see what’s right in front of me, which is why I ask, since you definitely see it better than I can.

(This is not an attempt at a bad faith argument; I’m firmly anti-anti-Semitism, and I’m not saying it’s not there. Frankly, I’d be surprised if there wasn’t any. Anywhere there’s people, their prejudices generally follow.)

  • Instead of compiling a kernel, try to make do with what your distro provides whenever there’s an update. Yes, there’s compilation, but it’s all done automatically. Then come to realise that the last two updates have had a subtle problem that caused the graphics driver to have a debilitating stroke whenever you try to watch a video in VLC, and have the whole system to go unresponsive as a result. Everything else works fine. YouTube. Games. But a cat video downloaded from Discord because (foreshadowing) the video won’t play in-browser for some reason? Too far, man. How dare.

Booting with another of those kernels is when you find out that’s also broken despite having used it for a while previously. Learn that, by sheer luck, one still-good kernel is still installed.

Hope that someone with more brains and energy with a similar setup will be able to report the problem properly to wherever that needs to be reported so that the next update doesn’t have the same problem. Things like this have been magically fixed before. You wait.

(Search the error message from the logs online. No close matches. Learn a bit, but the only advice was “try a different kernel”. You already thought of that)

In the meantime, remove the problem kernels and update GRUB with boot USB on standby in case you hose the system. Manage not to need it.

macOS is a derivative of BSD Unix. Linux was a from-scratch Unix-alike. The fundamental core, including the literal kernel, are different even if they act the same in many ways.

If you’re using “kernel” in a non-standard sense to mean “share some common tools, mindset and behaviour” then maybe, but that’s stretching the definition a long way from what technical people would expect.

  • LMDE Cinnamon user here. There’s a setting in the power options that tells the computer to switch to hibernate if it remains in suspend for a certain amount of time. Hibernated computers suspend to disk rather than RAM and are basically switched off, so need to POST to come back online.

It took me a while to find that setting, and it might be the same case with whatever you’re using.

What’s more, it only took effect if I used the GUI to put the computer into suspend mode. I usually use a keyboard combo to suspend the computer at night, but occasionally I’d use the GUI and come back in the morning to a hibernated computer.

Thought I’d been taking crazy pills or that there was something wrong.

My main gripes are that inconsistency between suspend methods and also that there’s no setting for how long to stay in suspend before hibernating. I have no idea if that’s a UEFI thing or something that could be set elsewhere, but I’d probably use that feature if I could set it.

As it is I’m giving the hybrid option a try. Basically it suspends like normal, but also sets up a hibernated restart for if the power goes out. That hasn’t happened yet, so can only assume it’ll work when the time comes.

  • Being dangerously close to the truth is a hallmark of certain kinds of humour. I appreciate it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Most days it isn’t mine either.

He died of drugs. Priscilla was 14 when she met Elvis. Lots of bands do unspeakable things with groupies. I am deliberately not connecting any dots there.

The dog thing, I have no idea where I got that. Probably one too many cartoons as a kid or exposure to horror tropes because I’d be horrified if someone did that for real.

  • That’s the smile of a man who did something incredibly illegal and all the other guys are trying to get him out of there ASAP while worrying about the consequences if anyone finds out.

As for what that illegal thing was, well, this is just me putting a concept to a picture that might have had no illegal acts preceding it whatsoever, but you know. Drugs maybe. Full on making out with an underage groupie who was loving the experience, but then their dad entered the next room looking for them, necessitating a rapid getaway and a s**t-eating grin. Grabbing a dog’s tail from the inside and, roink, turning it inside out or making an audacious internet comment with a sound effect like “roink”. Those sorts of things.
