They’re owned by a for-profit company, they collect data on you by default, they’ve already had privacy issues in the past, and they include non-free software by default. I would rather have a beginner start off with Debian or Trisquel. We shouldn’t be trapping people into these distros because then they’ll potentially get too comfortable and not make the switch. This is coming from someone who did start off on Ubuntu. Sure, it’s more convenient, but we should be teaching people to value freedom over convenience. Even if the data collection is minimal, it’s still data.

  • Yes, I understand that, but I don’t need all the games and stuff installed by default. Sway is a whole different experience. I use i3 on my older laptop (Macbook A1181 w/ Libreboot) but I personally wouldn’t want to use it unless I needed to.

GNOME is a gorgeous desktop environment, I just hate the fact that I have to take a additional 5-10 minutes every install just removing all the stuff I don’t need. Is there a debloater script for GNOME that you know of?

  • So what about when you are getting raped? What about when someone doesn’t want to let you go? Do you know what its like to almost be murdered?

If you want to say “Why do you even need to fight bro” you’re basically just saying good luck to all the people who can’t defend themselves and just letting them die. And do you not understand how regimes come to light? Just take a look at Russia, Putin just got to serve for another 6 years. Do you wonder how somebody stays in power for 24 years? Because nobody can fight back.
