i imagine a perfect world in which everything has guis and the guis contain all the information I could want about what it does including the relevant terminal commands. In this way, the gui is also the manual.

This thread has made it clear to me that I should wait another year before checking on gimp again.

Back in the day, I learned how to network winxp machines together, without a router, and without being able access the internet to find instructions, all because everything I needed to know about any given setting was in the gui where I could manipulate that setting. I had lan parties featuring dozens of pcs, all manually configured. Was this the correct way to do things? Fuck no, but it worked. I was able to make it work because I could see everything I needed to as I was doing it.

None of the above would have been possible if CLI was the only option.

Last time I did such, I brought all my friends to discord (and now I regret it). It is hard as fuck to convince normies to adopt a new platform. I was able to get some people on discord by promising them that I was running a dnd campaign (I was at the time, but it fell apart shortly therefafter), and those people haven’t been on discord since.

How do I convince them that lemmy is the future? I don’t think I can. Fundamentally, lemmy is objectively better than reddit (not for features, but because lemmy won’t ban you for mentioning green mario and other similar administrative bullshits). The problem isn’t the updates. The problem is microsoft downloading things and restarting my pc without my consent (annoying me until I say “fine, do it” is not consent). No one but me decides when my machine installs updates and reboots. I know I’m putting myself at risk if I let my system fall behind on updates. To repeat something I sort of said in response to someone else: If a publisher is scummy enough to have kernel-level anticheat in their game, they’re not going to give up kernel access just to appease a tiny minority of gamers.

Take Valorant for example. The one thing I know about Valorant is that cheats for Tarkov don’t work if Valorant is installed on your pc. This tells me that Valorant’s anticheat is doing things at all times, even when the game isn’t running, and I’m not ok with that.

Personally, I recommend just not playing those games. I’ve been having a great time with warframe and factorio. If I really feel the urge for a competitive arena shooter, I’ll boot up unreal tournament classic and play against bots. For those who don’t like my choices, there’s tons of other options. I digress.

In order for OP’s ask to actually be fullfilled in the manner I interpret to be desired, kernel-level anticheat needs to die alltogether. I see 2 ways for this to happen, neither of which are likely: A) Microsoft secures the windows kernel so that it can’t be modified, thus forcing standard practice to change. B) Linux overtakes windows as the dominant pc OS, thus forcing standard practice to change.

The post is about anticheat that doesn’t work on linux. Non-kernel-level anticheat works fine now thanks to wine/proton. That just leaves kernel-level anticheat. If a game has kernel-level anticheat, the studio is not going to remove it for the sake of a linux version. Therefore, to be compatible with linux, they would be introducing kernel-level anticheat into a linux version. To this, I say “fuck no”.
