On Lemmy, there’s no central location for communities, but even worse is that most of the big instances WILL have a community with that name - it’ll just be a dead community that someone started but never took off, so there’s a bunch of false leads.

No, but there’s fragmentation of communities. Instead of one central place for the community to form, you have to look at dozens of locations, where there may be a sub, but it may have 1 post in the last 4 months.

I think this is an artifact of what’s oddly the biggest weakness of the fediverse: decentralization.

When I used reddit back pre-api stuff, my front page was 100% niche subs I’d subscribed to, but those niches have trouble le growing here because there’s so many instances.

I was super active in the scuba subreddit. Here on Lemmy, there’s several scuba groups that tried to form, but none of them stuck because they were all on different instances instead of one central location where everyone could work together to make the community.

As a result, most of us haven’t been filtering out 99% of Lemmy because the 1% where we’d be active doesn’t exist. It’s like joining reddit and having your frontpage be /r/all. It’s a shitty experience that g9ves a lot of weight to political posts.

I love how they wake up in my backpack so they can overheat AND drain the battery at the same time.

We couldn’t get people to wear a mask or get a shot when a disease was killing millions in the open.

We definitely can’t get people to change their behavior over climate change.

BCBS changed their policies regarding sedation days after the assassination when no other methods of protest had worked. Insurance pre-authorization denials dropped across the board instantly.

The assassination of Thompson, as ugly as it is, has instantly lead to a net benefit to society when all non-violent attempts had failed and things were actively getting worse.

People are alive today because Thompson was publicly killed and his assassination had widespread support.

I think a municipal economic development corporation grant could be an answer.

EDCs exist in lots of cities. The usual setup is they’re given a percentage of local sales tax, and they provide grants to businesses to move into town or start up. When the business is sucessful, they’ll end up paying back more in taxes than was given to them initially, both through direct taxes, but also by providing higher-paying jobs for residents, who will pay more in their property taxes and spend money at local businesses, bringing in more sales tax.

The EDC could pay for the startup to provide the service locally, and then it can spread to other cities, who can either pay for it as a municipal service, or through subscriptions.

Growing up, we had 5 TV stations and 20 radio stations that managed to do it just off of cereal advertisements. I’d gladly pay 5 bucks a month for it, and with millions of people in the metro area just having 1% of people use a $5/month service you’d be looking at 6 figures a month, which is plenty to pay for the service.

Or you can do it like News stations do and just use a fucking camera feed and police acanner to have someone say “hey - there’s a lot of cars at Interstate 99 and Main” or “There’s reports of a wreck at 300 Elm street”.

Traffic reporting doesn’t require device-level tracking.

“Except traffic” is not a little thing. It’s like putting up an ad for a house with all the features you’d expect, except a roof.

With my daily commute, there are a dozen routes I can take and traffic conditions make it so that from day to day, there can be an hour difference between different routes. It’s literally the only reason I use navigation apps over a cheap GPS unit with no live online connection requirement to navigate.

If legitimate means were available, the man would have been serving a life sentence instead of being gunned down in the street. Or even better, prior CEOs being jailed would have scared them into not sentencing customers to death for profit.

Instead, the barbarism of unchecked capitalism lead us to a situation where someone getting murdered in cold blood is seen by millions as an act of heroism because we never see these monsters held to account for the harm they cause.

Luigi and the reaction to the assassination are symptoms of a failing system on the verge of becoming terminal, and more recent developments are not encouraging.

The person he killed was responsi6for many deaths. His big push as CEO was specifically to deny care to people with medical needs that were paying his company specifically so they would have medical care.

When legitimate means of justice are denied, people will eventually take matters into their own hands. And when millions of people support that vigilante justice, it means the law is failing. This whole incident should be seen as the canary going silent. Shit’s about to get bad on the streets.

The last thing we need is more barriers to entry. People have hundreds of SMS /MMS contacts they’vebuilt up over decades. You can’t expect people to say “fuck all that” and start over from scratch.

It really sounds like your issue with Signal is it’s not the correct service for your use. It’s like declaring a wrench bad because it’s not good at driving nails.

It’s meant to replace people’s text messaging apps with .i imal barriers to entry. People’s existing SMS/MMS contacts aren’t stored by user account names, but by phone number.

When I added Signal to my device, I was able to open up my existing contacts and go.

We got the meteoric rise of Obama, the Arab Spring, and Occupy Wall Street from the democratization of information.

It was devastating to the old guard. But then they realized they could use the same tools we’d used to spread information to spread disinformation. Then when people called them on their bullshit, the regular propaganda stopped being the goal.

No longer was the purpose to make us believe what they had to say. It was too make us not believe anything at all. They flooded the world with so much bullshit that nothing seems true anymore, and in the confusion they’re openly enacting fascist policies while pretending the news is fake.

New Coke was different in 2 important ways.

1. It was actually a way to hide the flavor change in the switch to Corn Syrup instead of Sugar, and never intended to be permanent.

2. Pepsi existed

There’s no real commercial competition for Microsoft. Linux is great, but there’s nobody for a business to call when shit fucks up. And Apple’s walled garden and high prices make it terrible for enterprise.
