Wet market is weirdly interpreted by most in the west as meaning literally wet and inheritently unsanitary. One guy I talked to thought it meant the floating markets like the tourist trap in Bangkok.

A wet market is just the opposite of a dry market - food, drink, fresh goods. A “dry market” is clothes, furniture, devices.

There are unsanitary wet markets, but there are unsanitary Walmarts and Tescos. The western response to demand all wet markets be shut was just pure ignorance and prejudice.

Finding waste water samples from Italy doesn’t prove it came from there. It does disprove the idea that it originated from someone dropping a beaker or eating a bat on a particular street in Wuhan 3 months later.

If it helps, the (main) lab leak theory was conclusively disproven back in 2020 when waste water samples from Italy in September 2019 to December 2019 showed the presence of natural precursors to Covid-19, with signatures indistinguishable from “the” Covid. Lots of people were reporting a strong ‘flu-like’ bout of illness at Christmas 2019. The idea that it leaked from a lab in Wuham in December 2019 makes no sense. Neither does wet markets and bat soup by the way - that was just good old racism.

A troublesome but mundane coronavirus of the sort that millions every year dismissed as a cold had a slight mutation and turned deadly and prolific. I think the knowledge that this can happen at any time scares people far more than the lovely little idea of it coming out of a test tube so we can blame a person or a race or a government for it, direct anger at a tangible foe rather than the fragility of biological life.

If third parties means AWS, then every website you’ve accessed this year shares your data with third parties. This is why the GDPR exists.

You can disable the built-in apps.

They can’t be removed as pre-installed apps are part of the OS image. It’s a bit like the immutable distros now popular in Linux. Any update to the OS would just re-add them anyway.

These apps aren’t exactly huge in disk size so disabling them is safe and effective. It will reduce battery and memory usage if you would ordinarily have them running in the background for some reason.

No source code and no federation just makes this a worse app with less liability for bad actions. Not sure why he’s pushing this before those are ready. Pixelfed itself isn’t exactly finished yet.

Nintendo is a bunch of humans. If my boss asks me to see if I can find the installer for an old version of our software, you can bet I’ll check anywhere before volunteering to go scrape old hard drives.

They are not “banning” emulators. They take action against two sorts of problems: leaking, and distribution of copyrighted material. Yuzu was taken down because they stupidly started charging for help with playing Tears of the Kingdom before its release. Other emulators have been threatened because they included binary console OS software (rather than actually fully emulating the console itself) or actually distributed game ROMs.

Dolphin has been around for about 20 years now. Why? Because they don’t distribute copyrighted material, recommend against doing so, and don’t require to include any binaries from the console.

Short answer: You don’t. Buy games and dump them with a Wii.

Long answer: Downloading commercial games is illegal and thus strongly frowned upon by the Dolphin developers. To prevent legal issues, this includes gray areas like downloading games which you purchased earlier. You don’t necessarily need to own a gaming console by yourself because you can buy a game disc and dump them with a friend’s console. On the other hand, copying a friend’s game dump is considered illegal again.

Also, lol @ the idea that it’s hypocrisy for them to use their own game files. You understand that’s what a ROM is, right? It isn’t magic. It’s just a binary file.

“Ripping” ROMs, or dumping them, takes almost no effort. If you have the cartridge reader its about as much work as taking photos off an SD card. Certainly nothing at all like cracking a game, which is pretty much software development.

Please consider informing yourself before forming strong opinions.

Just so we’re clear, are you under the impression that “ROMs acquired from the Internet” represent something other than Nintendo’s work?

The number of people that do this is not going to even remotely shift the usage share percentage.

Yes of the pre-Olympian deities, a lot of them are quite literal and almost animist, in the sense that it is clear that the god is simultaneously a being but also a physical reality of the world. The sky, the earth, the ocean, night, day, darkness, light. And their children are concepts associated with their parents - to early civilised humans, the night creates strife, doom, death.

Only in later “generations” does a truly distinct personhood emerge - eg Zeus is not lightning himself, but he can control it. It’s hard not to wonder if the generations of gods seen differently represent actual waves of religious reform or absorption where family trees were made to fit the story rather than vice versa.

Ouranos is the Greek spelling. As far as the Greek god is concerned, that is the better name.

Uranus is the Latin spelling. Just like the other planets planets are named Mercury not Hermes, Mars not Ares, Jupiter not Zeus, astronomers looked to Latin not Greek for naming.

However the person that named Uranus fucked up because while Uranus is the Latin spelling of Ouranos, the Romans called the God Caelus. Rather than use the Roman name (again, like Neptune instead of Poseidon), the person who named it just used the transliteration not the actual nomenclature.
