Self-hosting isn’t too bad. With a properly configured router (not as hard as it sounds), if you’re hosting something like a lemmy instance, the worst people can do is spam you with too many requests. An ISP that disallows self-hosting is a bummer though… having a static IP is pretty essential.
Anyone who replies to this with “any mistakes in C code are the developer’s fault” should be banned from the kernel. I know someone’t going to try it.

What I’m saying is, you can’t agree that we should help them avoid extremist instances AND say that the instance doesn’t matter.
Right, but that’s the issue. It can give them an extremist instance and they join and get banned and never come back. The instance matters, and they know that intuitively, which is why they have choice paralysis in the first place. We should help them choose by providing information about each instance.
