i setup my old job with linux internally. never had issues. day i quit boss told me to install windows so he can find a replacement employee. sure.

3 years later. boss wants me back. they’ve had nothing but problems. but i’m not allowed to install linux again.

he says, “if windows didn’t have so many problems you would be out of a job.”

my boss told me today if we moved to literally any non-microsoft platform or software, i’d be out of a job.

and he’s right. most of us only have careers because microsoft can’t push out a software that’s more than barebone functional - and everyone use them even if there are far superior alternatives out there literally only because of familiarity.

i’m not planning to stop giving microsoft shit of course. they should be criminally prosecuted over their exchange service even and how it’s blacklisting competitors to force businesses onto the platform a la microsoft classic tactics. but eh.

my same exact opinion and experience as well.

nothing beats the mac finder, mac touchpad, and mac scaling/ui. other than that, linux does everything windows/mac does, but better. imo. so definitely in agreement here.

it’s funny you bring up printing because my experience has always been better on linux. even at the office i constantly have to resolve issues with the windows and macs but my linux admin station “just works”.

I’ve said this a million times, but it’s definitely about time we stop spending taxes on a rogue entity across the ocean who definitely does not have our best interests in mind. I’m not convinced it’s even legal and I don’t understand why the legal prospects have never been brought up about this fucking situation. R&D money should not go to a foreign corporation. In addition, I (and pretty much everyone else on the planet) already paid for microsofts products and services so my government can use it (against my will), so why the fuck do they get away with setting a public price at all? It should legally be free or the governments shouldn’t need to pay for it in the first place, and it should legally be open source because it’s publicly funded. There are just so many problems with the entire idea of our government using Windows, Office, and their services.

most software is web based and OS-agnostic so there is no destruction and rebuilding happening, and for everything else, FOSS is literally free. How is it expensive to switch from X with a monthly cost to X that is free? Even if things breaks initially, the cost would equalize and long-term be considerably reduced.

gnome currently because nearly everything i use is designed for gnome and looks mismatched on other DEs. but the gnome workflow largely feels like a prison.

honestly, this is a great point in favor of arguing a switch to FF. if all the plugins that are now getting wiped from chrome move over to FF and tell users they are now availablr on FF, and users advertising just use X plugin on FF to solve glaring issues with chrome, then there is no incentive to stick with chrome anymore.

i haven’t used gomuks, i’m not a big fan of terminal applications

nheko has so many issues. one version it was impossible to login. then when they fixed that, the encryption kept breaking and a lot of messages from my friends were lost. it also lacks a lot of features. last time i tried nheko was in january. so maybe they have fixed the stability issues and added some modern features; but otherwise it can’t compete because it can’t be used as a daily driver.

considering telegram is basically the only modern and stable non-electron chat that runs buttery smooth, such a matrix client would be a game changer.

i’m stuck with telegram for now because i have an m1 mbp and an ideapad tablet with linux, neither which can run more than 1-2 electron apps simultaneously without screeching to a crawl and putting itself on fire.

like, 99% of my life revolves around hating on electron; it feels like electron has become standard for modern much needed productivity software. and it makes using computers that aren’t super high end basically useless. developers need to start reconsidering their end-users, because electron will never be optimized for non-highend hardware (i’m not even convinced electron run snappy on a highend computer, but i would love to be proven wrong because currently i just assume coders have gotten too lazy to care about the end-user).
