  • I use the Boost app for Lemmy so it basically feels exactly like the ideal Reddit experience felt back then, which is fantastic.

As for being put off, the only thing that really bothers me is the extreme hatred for Windows and the deepthroating of Linux. It’s creepy.

Like, I love Linux and use it for many things alongside Windows, but I don’t get obsessively weird about it to the point of creating memes or going out of my way to tell people why they’re wrong for using one over the other, you know?

If that were toned down I’d certainly feel a little more relaxed, but on the whole the Lemmy experience has been lovely <3

I don’t live in that country, but while I like Lemmy, no, I don’t have hope any more. I’ve not had that for a long time now.

It’s interesting though, to see the US slowly turn into our enemy, and to consider that Germany will be one of our strongest democratic, antifascist allies against the new axis of evil when the time comes.

Thankfully I’m too old to be forced to fight in the next war against fascism, but I suppose poverty and climate change might kill me before then anyway. There truly is no hope left for me.

  • I think when you’re on a ship being sailed suicidally into a storm, arguing they some passengers shouldn’t jump into life boats to escape just because it will only leave the crazy people onboard and “we’re in this together” isn’t particularly compelling.

Like, surely that’s the point? That state finds it’s people, their way of life and values to have diverged so far from the government and overall culture of the nation they’re currently teamed up with, so they choose to end their union and become a free nation state again, as is their right.

The alternative to this peaceful split into two countries that can now run themselves the way they want to, would be one side attempting to impose their way of life on the other, to the point of massive crushing oppression or eventual civil war to see which side will dominate and force the other to convert to their ways.

Surely when we consider the options, peacefully going their separate ways when they’re no longer compatible with each other’s societies and values seems the best result, no?

  • Gosh you’re right, I’m so special and kind and humble, I deserve to be recognised for how extremely humble I am ♥️

In seriousness, I have good days and bad days, sometimes I’m grumpy or pretty my anger about a bag thing happening to people get the better of me and go into my words, but I do care about everyone, I do want a better world and an end to bigotry, fascism, racism, techno-feudalism, late stage capitalism, and if I could own my own house this lifetime that’d be great too, for my family’s sake…

I’m just so angry at the state of things, so disenfranchised, so fed up, and places like this are where I actually see all of the articles and posts about this awful stuff, not to mention actually running in to bootlickers and scummy people. It’s hard not to get grumpy and angry while I’m here :-(

I might take a break from this stuff next year, I’m not sure yet. Staying informed feels important, but at the same time feels futile and damaging to my mental health, so I might just let myself be ignorant for a while, you know?

Anyway, thanks for the kind words :-)

  • Uh, what?

What makes you think Christmas is for kids? Just because they enjoy it? Shall we ban movies, video games, etc for adults too?

I’ve never heard someone suggest that adults shouldn’t enjoy their hard earned holidays, and spread joy with gifts and such to each other, because they’re no longer 12 or whatever.

What makes you think my and my family and friends enjoyment of Christmas is less important than slightly reducing how much money some shop might make for a few weeks?

I’ll keep enjoying the small joys of life, thanks. Kids can sod off.

  • To be fair it’s been less than a day, one of the great things about internet messaging is how asynchronous it can be, it’s great for calming anxieties about needing to come up with a reply immediately like if you’re on the phone or something x.x

You’re right though, I don’t reply to things often enough, partly because I’m very sick with COVID at the moment but also a lot of it is my social anxiety and fear of rejection.

I get so scared of what people might say that I avoid looking at the replies, even when I initially reach out because I want to interact with people and form connections ><

It’s one of my big problems that I need to overcome, I’m still working out how to tackle it, but I do know it’s a problem, and it’s mine to solve.

Alas I can’t afford things like therapy, so I just have to stumble around trying to figure my ADHD, possibly autistic (wish I could get seen for a diagnosis…), anxious, dumb ass brain out 😅

I’m sorry in the mean time for being a bit annoying, I don’t mean to be on purpose :-)

  • Whether a pet gets the food it needs isn’t something you can even have an opinion about.

To be fair, I have a pretty strong opinion on pets getting the food they need. My opinion is that not feeding an animal appropriately is, at best, neglectful.

    The great thing is that it’s easy to find out what is an appropriate diet for any pet, clever scientists figured it out and wrote up guidelines for us to follow. Here in the UK for example we would follow the European FEDIAF;

Pet food nutritional guidelines for manufacturers in the UK are produced by FEDIAF (the European Pet Food Industry). These guidelines (also known as Codes) detail the nutritional needs of cats and dogs at varying life stages. They are regularly updated to include the latest nutritional research.

    https://europeanpetfood.org/self-regulation/safety

So long as you’re following the guidelines and giving your pet all the nutrients it needs - regardless of how they’re produced (vegan food is fine so long as it replicates the full dietary needs of the animal for example) - you’re good 😊👍

I know it’s silly to have to point that out, I’m not sure why people argued over it (I didn’t see the original discourse). But yes, just to reiterate, it doesn’t matter how you prefer to source the food - vegan, halal, whatever fits your beliefs - just so long as it is a nutritionally complete diet for the animal <3

On the subject of admin/moderation, it is wonderful to see the team trying to be thoughtful, transparent, and kind even in the face of high tempers and heated beliefs. I wish we had more of this calibre of person out in the world :-)

  • If someone can’t accept or understand that a cat eats a meat based diet then they deserve to have reality thrown in their face. Better than some poor animals being tortured.

Dang, is that what happened? It’s sad to think that there are people mistreating animals that they care about accidentally, through trying to apply their own human morals and rules to them.

Cats are hunters, they eat meat. If that’s an issue for your home then fair enough, your house your rules. Just don’t get a cat, or a carnivorous pet in general. There’s lots of cool pets out there that are herbivores :-)
