This smug attitude is why vegans get a bad rap. Sure eating vegan helps, but you don’t have to go all the way. For instance, eating chicken instead of beef or reducing the amount of meat you eat. Imagine if the same thing was applies to transportation: it’s a lot easier to convince people to make your next car electric than to have no car at all (assuming America where commutes are long and public transit ranges from mediocre to nonexistent).

Or, you DO find it, but it’s glitchy/outdated (I think there was an issue with Steam). Or you search for the program, find the website, download a .tar.gz, wonder what the hell is this double extension abomination, double click it, doesn’t work, look it up, apparently it’s a type of container like a zip and not a basic program like an exe and instead of using the GUI like a normal person you have to type “tar -xcv” or something that might as well be black magic (I can’t even remember the correct letters), then to actually install you have to find the magic “make” “sudo make install” command, and it still fails.

Much easier to double click the .exe, accept the license agreement, and hit continue a few times.

You don’t have to get rid of all the stuff, it doesn’t break the system like missing sounds or whatnot. Some of its even helpful like weather and news. Plus it isn’t that hard to make a Microsoft account, don’t you need one anyway for Minecraft? And since when do you need drivers for an SSD, don’t those usually work out of the box?

I frequently see comments saying stuff like “don’t trust them, they’re from Lemmy.ml” or “I’m glad Hexbear defederated” usually in terms of tankies/pro-russia anti-Ukraine support. Or occasionally, a random dislike of Lemmy.world because it’s too much like Reddit (isn’t that the point?)

When it comes to things I don’t want to read during my lunch break, yes.

If I had to read a 20 minute post just to doomscroll Elon and Linux, I’d just stick to Reddit. Whatever nefarious stuff they’re doing isn’t more valuable than 20 minutes of my real world time.

And like switching Linux distros, switching Lemmy instances means losing everything unless you have an external backup.

Yes but this is Lemmy, where anyone who doesn’t think Capitalism = bad and billionaires should be shot is a nazi. Some people don’t want to think about politics all the time, especially when it’s so extreme (no I don’t believe half of American voters are nazis). I know the obsession with Elon’s salute made me avoid Lemmy and go back to my niche subreddits until I got bored of them.

If you want walkable cities, try Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic. It’s janky and complex as hell, but citizens don’t even have cars by default (unless you explicitly build parking lots and buy cars for them), and they rely entirely on walking and public transit to get around. Buildings can receive emergency services via pedestrian paths too (unless they’re something like a grocery store that has parking spaces)

…everyone is arguing? Considering the studies given by both sides, and the constant promotion of that one brand of vegan cat food, it’s hard to give one side a clear objective win (though I do lean toward giving the cat meat).
