I don’t want to get pedantic about this. There’s two reasons the “original” lemmy uses ml as its TLD:
Perhaps “tongue-in-cheek” was the wrong descriptor. More pointing out it has nothing to do with Mali, but sites haven’t been using TLDs properly for ages now.
The ml stands for “Marxism-Leninism” as a tongue-in-cheek joke rather than anything to do with Mali. Similar to how a lot of domains ending in .ly (i.e. bit.ly) has nothing to do with Libya.
It’s all of those things, not just one.

I’m looking for a bit more info though. Did you get any other benefits besides the equivalent of warm fuzzies? Sounds like an extremely outsized cost/benefit assessment you had to confirm.
Why was it worth it? What benefits did you gain from the change?
If the government told me that my “score” dictating my ability to participate in society would be greatly affected based on what I thought of the government, I’d support the heck out of that government too.

Something something could, something something should. Centralized Wikipedia is not a problem in need of a solution.
This feels like a hasty “solution” to an invented “problem”. Sure, Wikipedia isn’t squeaky clean, but it’s pretty damn good for something that people have been freely adding knowledge to for decades. The cherry-picked examples of what makes Wikipedia " bad" are really not outrageous enough to create something even more niche than Wikia, Fandom, or the late Encyclopedia Dramatica. I appreciate the thought, but federation is not a silver bullet for everything. Don’t glorify federation the way cryptobros glorify the block chain as the answer to all the problems of the world.
