This is a big one. I have a lot of Google photos usage, and while I’ve tried OneDrive and PrintDrive, and while both are decent they don’t really match up and I’ve been hesitant to self host immach or something because to ke the point of a cloud photo storage was to be part of my 321 backup strategy.

Getting bounced from photos for youtube usage would really be a tough pill, but it would definitely hasten my exit.

I don’t see how running high beams held you see when there is oncoming cars with brighter lights. Maybe it has more to do with the fact that older cars are smaller and lower?

I am not disputing new cars have higher brightness on regular lights, that absolutely is true. Though running high beams throws light both forward and up toward the oncoming drivers eyes.

I don’t disagree. There are plenty of led upgrade kits that are way too bright regularly and also probably misaligned causing them to be double bad. Brighter than normal and aimed directly into your eyes.

I’m with you though, driving at night used to be a lot different and more enjoyable than it is today with all these extremely bright lights pointed at your eyes.

There’s a load of cars with headlights that are overly bright, but there is an even bigger epidemic of idiots driving around with high beams on as part of regular course.

In the city there is no need for those, ever. Let alone always being on.

Same here. That works well for desktop, they also have an electron app that wraps their web ui into a desktop app and it works well enough. Bridge works very well for any other desktop app you’d want to use.

The only trouble is that on mobile your option is their app or the web interface, no ability to use alternative apps. The mobile app is good, but not great.

Overall its a good service and I’m happy bit you need to know these limitations going in or it could be frustrating.

The OP discusses exactly a solution to the anyone setting up an instance to capture the data, because the users home instance federates their votes anonymously.

Id be curious the surface area of those million population centers? Lots of the US is very spread out even for “cities” only the old cities on the East Coast have significant density.

Did you forget the ./s or something? Lemmy itself is developed on GitHub, as are plenty of other “valuable” open source projects. To pretend nothing of value is built there is putting your head in the sand.

If you’re developing software on GitHub you have a chance at getting some useful feedback, bug reports and maybe even PRs. Like it or not, the network effect is real.

You can easily migrate custom domain that to proton for email, calendar, and drive. What you’ll struggle with is docs and sheets.

Can you read data off a floppy disk today? How many others can? How many in fifty years can? The point is that left alone our physical media of today is not compatible in the future because you need specialty tools to read it.

Anyone can pickup and read a piece of paper or a rock with carvings in it. The point is that not only does the media need to survive, but the means to make use of it needs to survive as well.

That is the key issue with technology today. Someone needs to keep loving the data from floppy to zip drive to thumb drive to hard drive to whatever is next or it’s lost.
