There are three big families of distros: Debian / Fedora / Arch. Any distro that is a derative of either of these three use their package manager.

Tinkering with the DE is definitely fun and you should play with it. Be careful though, because the freedom you’re allowed also allows you to break things. But tinkering with the DE isn’t the worst thing you could break.

Oh wait, I see that vmlinuz file has a version to it. I couldn’t remember if vmlinuz was the kernel or not, because I used to have multiples of them, but these days I only have one.
GRUB gets installed on your harddisk in your boot partition. UEFI is a standard for your firmware located outside your harddisk. You go from firmware -> bootloader (grub) -> kernel.
The firmware is closed source under BIOS and UEFI. And I remember UEFI having some kind of standard bootloader by itself, so it doesn’t even a bootloader if I can remember correctly.

I would say it’s not very different, just one league above all the others that I’ve come across.
The three things that stand out in my opinion is how much their package manager can query packages, it’s rolling release and the number of packages they have in the AUR.
It makes Arch the most complete and up to date Linux distro,
with the exception of a user friendly forum,
that doesn’t look like the nazi soup kitchen from Seinfeld,
and an installer.
Your situation sounds like in need of serious hands on action and it will only drain people’s empathy and sympathy who can only help you remotely if you continue without getting close help.
