As long as I revert to the open source driver before doing major OS upgrades I haven’t had issues either in years. Last time I tried AMD though it was a shit show.

The privacy conscious choice is to not use Plex at this point. It is only a matter of time before they start directly screwing with private library’s.

Thanks to the likes of Proton, gaming on Linux is a hell of a lot better than it was ~5 years ago. You can actually do it now for the most part without to much fuss in my experience as long as you stick to Steam.

But once you leave Steam or get something brand new made by an EA and have to leave on third party implementations of Proton or raw Wine to get things working it gets a lot worse.

I use 2 matching Synology NAS systems. 1 backs up to the other daily. Then one of them backs up to Synology C2 weekly.

Once they get to the point were all of the options that don’t require incredibly inconvenient sacrifices in functionality to maintain the interesting stuff like a video game console then that will kill interest in the market for me.

I’m not sure Google has fully thought through what it means to just be a worse version of what Apple puts out, but with more ads.

Given how obviously impressionable and just not “on top of things” the politicians are in the US these days, I’m not sure someone could come up with a argument that convinced me that alien life with the ability to do interplanetary travel would waste their time trying to communicate with our leaders.

Within a day they would just decide to kill all of us for the safety of the galaxy.

I personally think the whole backlash against master/slave in the computing world is people looking for something in their sphere of knowledge to be offended about so they can feel like they are part of “a movement”. Even if some mustache twirling racist was the first “computer guy” to come up with the term and meant it to be offensive, that is not how sane people view it today. So some of the advocates for changing it should stop trying to build it up into some Pizzagate-like conspiracy against black/brown people.

Having said that, I also don’t have any strong attachments to the phrasing either. Phase it out in favor of something that makes everyone happy if that keeps the peace. It is just a term that made sense at the time to describe something. There is nothing stopping us from changing it to something else now if we so choose. It is not erasing heritage or some such nonsense. If anything, people having strong hangups about it if there are better or equally as good terms out there that doesn’t make people uncomfortable is far weirder in my opinion.

The only thing I have somewhat strong opinions about is making it some high priority to go back and erase those terms from solutions that already exist. Change them as you update things, sure, but why create extra work to update something old that is currently working if the only change is not functional and just verbiage. Seems like wasted effort that could be better directed and solving functional issues to me.

This combination of arrogance and complacency sort of thinking is how it does happen on Linux one day.

If all of the parts of the internet that the average person finds useful goes down, then it matters little that technically “the internet” is not down. If it can’t be useful then it is as good as “down”.

Mine stays on 24/7/365 unless I am going to be out of town.

These days I care a lot less that a package is outdated than I do it being unstable personally. If security concerns are getting patched and it is still doing what I want it to do, I couldn’t care less about UI elements getting moved around just to make some PM happy.

All of these types are articles always leave out the calculations of what your time is worth to you and the maintenance costs of spare hard drives and other equipment. The TCO is not just the initial investment in hardware/software alone. Unless you plan to host something unreliably and value your time at nothing. In which case I hope you don’t get friends or family hooked on your stuff or everyone will have a bad time and be back to Google Drive/Docs and Netflix within 5 years.

The reason they leave it out I feel is because once you factor all of that stuff in the $10/month your paying for Google Drive storage or the ~$25 your paying Netflix starts to make a lot more sense when pared with a decent local backup from a Synology NAS for the “I can’t lose this” stuff like baby pictures of your kids. Which blows their entire premise out of the water.

Haha, it amuses me to no end that ever since I watched a “Down the Rabbit Hole” video on Youtube about TempleOS a few years back I have seen it crop up in varies places from time to time as I don’t remember ever seeing anything about it before.

Makes me wonder if it was always there and I just didn’t notice it until I was familiar with it.

Yep, while this meme is funny and in jest. If someone actually seriously gave me shit for saying “folder” or “directory” I would have to ask them what Stallman’s toe nails actually taste like. Because that is up there with his level of being rigid about something that I just can’t stand.

Outside of his right to repair work I find most anything Rossmann gets involved in is questionable. He is a good example of someone that got popular for something they cared about and knew something about, then mistakenly got the idea that success meant they had valid opinions on other things they know nothing about.

Rossmann knows about laptop hardware repair and running a small business. But that doesn’t necessarily translate into being a knowledgeable voice in the software dev or large scale digital advertising industries.

He is just a mouthpiece for the company behind Greyjay, nothing more.
