  • As suggested below cardboard to block out any ground that you are not using. This cardboard is usually done after the season is done (in the fall) and covered with leaf litter and then soil in the spring. This pushes the cardboard down where it will act as a weed block as it starts decomposing. Most “weed seeds” only sprout when exposed to sunlight and air and are air driven. So this cardboard will block the seeds where they are.

Since its spring I would recommend putting down seeding straw instead of cardboard (but you can do both) around your plants. The straw will slow any new windblown seeds from falling and will cover any of your bare ground so the light doesn’t activate any new seeds. Moreover, the straw should hold moisture for the rest of your plants and should start decomposing over the season. Also I think the straw looks better than cardboard throughout the season. With the straw you can start composting in place by placing any garden scraps under the straw where it will start breaking down out of sight.

  • At one point I had three accounts but am now down to two. I had one at Kbin.social which was my primary and then I had one specifically for browsing lemmynsfw. When kbin.social started having issues I created my midwest.social account. Kbin.social died so I am now back to two. There is nothing wrong with having a few as a backup if your instance goes down or to see a slightly different feed. I think a lot of people have multiple

  • I don’t think the tarp will help with anything while its below freezing. Typically the tarps is used to increase the temperature, remove sunlight to kill the plants and if it gets hot enough to kill all weed seeds. So I doubt that will help before its below freezing. I have used it before to kill some weeds but that was late august. It won’t be hot enough and will act similarity to snow.

The best method would be to do Sheet Mulching which is similar to what you are planning on doing but not 100%. I would start with a layer of cardboard, followed up by mulch / leaf litter and then finalize with compost. I would plant my plants directly in the compost and then cover in straw. You won’t need the silage tarp because the cardboard weed layer should stop the grass and most of the ivy from growing. It will also start composting which the tarp will not. Around the edges the ivy can survive since the shared roots pass sugars from anything outside of the cardboard.

I have used sheet mulching to create two different small garden over the last few years. I started mine in the fall and planted in the spring which worked well. I have done it now for our second year for our vegetable garden along side some no / low dig methods. Last year was our first full year and our garden was thriving without any amendments. I expect even better results this year as soon as we can start planting.

  • Yeah. The Facebook official method does not download photos or videos you are tagged in. They only allow you to download things you uploaded. So if you are like me and didn’t upload any photos but were tagged by others it downloads nothing.

What is this yt-dlp? I have seen it mentioned without any links or information about how to use it. Quick searches shows it as some kind of CLI?

  • Of course I figured out an okay solution right after posting it.

I had save all of the Facebook videos to find them on the mobile app. From the mobile app I had to open the video and find the share link. I then had to copy this link into my web browser and click on it. This lets me download the file onto my phone which I then had to upload to a cloud storage which I am now downloading back to my computer. What a pain in the ass.

I’ve been using this extensively in my garden / yard over the last few years with great success. We’ve used it in our vegetable garden, our herb / tea garden and now we’re doing it for a section for cut flowers and Dahlias for next year. We haven’t bagged any leaves in the last few years using them and some of our neighbors on our gardens. Sheet mulching for the win
