Yep yep, I didn’t take offense. Tbh idk why I still do it. Just habit I guess.
Edit: I made an edit but I won’t say what it was. :)
Maybe it is. I always considered it a courtesy since otherwise it can be difficult to see what was edited. It’s from my reddit days.
But if the file system needs extra writes anyway for CoW, and the SSD needs its own CoW, then wouldn’t that end up being exponential writes? Or is there some mechanism which mitigates that?
I don’t disagree with that. They’re also a much smaller group so I think it just stands to reason.
But I do appreciate that they’re taking chances (probably for the same reason). Cosmic is quite impressive already and a good alternative to Gnome/KDE/Cinnamon; better than the Pop Shell on Gnome.
Edit: a word
Yes. My gaming rig has been on Pop for years now.
I hate the idea of still being on Pop. But it’s so damned pleasant.
Now on the Cosmic alpha.
The CoW nature of Btrfs means it’s often slower than ext4 for common tasks, right? It also means more writes to your SSDs.
I’ve stuck to ext4 so far, as someone who doesn’t really have a need for snapshotting.
Edit: I’m not an expert on file systems in the least, so do chime in if these assumptions are incorrect.
Do you have some kind of media library plugin for Deadbeef?
I used to have a side system with /home on its own partition precisely to learn different distros and setups. It makes it much easier having a partition which is retained.
These days, qemu is your friend for playing around with random Linux stuff.
It is NOT, in fact, more user friendly than 15 years ago.
This is just patently false. Pick any common distro.
Yes, bigger than that. I have tried Clementine.
I really just want a media player that:
Has good media library support based on tags (lots do)
Has ReplayGain support (lots do)
Lets me have an album art panel bigger than a thumbnail (and here is where so many options fall short, including Rhythmbox)
Deadbeef seems to be the closest due to its good customizability, but the plugin which allows for actual media library capability is apparently Mac-only, for some unfathomable reason.
Gonna be stuck with Foobar via Wine for a fair sight longer, I think.
I tend to use food names, like tomato
and sausage
. But no potato
, and definitely no apple
.
I also utilize the special-use domain home.arpa for all my LAN systems, so accidental collisions are largely impossible.
It’s probably a bit more complicated than that.
When Star Trek: The Next Generation was remastered in HD, it required a) direct access to the film reels, b) complete re-editing of the film from scratch into the episodes, and c) completely new effects, since the original ones had been done on video post-film transfer.
For a sitcom, c probably doesn’t apply, but b and even a are potentially huge costs.
This is also true of large corporations in general, in the US. Tax breaks, loopholes, and similar everywhere – if you’re rich enough. Privatized profits, but socialized losses.
So stupid.
There is no complex reasoning needed for nukes. You just need a simple conditional. Were nukes launched? Then you have to launch – mutually assured destruction. If nukes weren’t launched, then don’t launch.
The most efficient solution is simply leaving humans with the key. Surely DOGE will save us here, right? Right?
The Fiat Panda of text editors
It’s just a matter of time as so many corporate products and services enshittify. That, plus FOSS’ main issue is the average person not having any idea what it is or what it means.
I don’t disagree, though I will add: there is a lot more to right-wing politics than being anti-trans. Shit is bad for all groups except the rich, and divide and conquer is a thing.
None of that is meant to belittle the trans experience at the moment. I am aware of the fact that they are, minimally, a kind of sacrificial lamb, and I can only hope that the situation improves.
