Windows 11 sleep mode is causing all kinds of issues for me too on one laptop. Especially WiFi.

It shuts down WiFi to save power and never wakes it up regardless of what power save settings say. I’m also using a cellular WiFi and have to disable one of the modes in the netadapter for that to even work, but the driver keeps resetting the choices made in the device manager and such. Complete garbage.

It’s my daughters brand new laptop for school. She needs to open the lid and use the pc for browser applications. My youngest doesn’t have her own laptop, so I gave a beaten up 20 year old laptop and installed Mint, because windows 10 couldn’t even boot properly with only 4 gb of ram. She does the same thing. Open the lid, use the browser. It always works.

This is not a special case. This is not me being to dumb to use it or too smart and demanding. I think it’s perfectly reasonable for anyone to expect a laptop to function as intended when opening the lid and using the browser. Windows just doesn’t do that.

There are many posts preaching for the choir, but I wouldn’t call it an echo chamber. It’s more like a dead sound chamber where the ideas dies in agreement. It doesn’t bounce off the walls or resonate. It’s already there so no answer is required.

Lemmy would benefit from more users playing the devil’s lawyer, but I think it’s too small for anyone to use their main profile for that, and alt-accounts would quickly get blocked or banned.

Actual users with opposing views wouldn’t be of much help. Politics isn’t very nuanced these days. It’s not red or blue, left or right or whatever. It’s polarized into a new duality: Those that give a shit and those who are proud idiots. Lemmy is on the good side of this and will not benefit from being more accepting of idiots.

Also, they simply don’t want you to know. Especially if the whole setup is already a patchwork of sensors that barely work together in the first place. It might cause unnecessary questions, concerns or even liabilities.

A lot of it is useless anyway as long as the car is not broken, and if it is broken, the sensor might be broken too. It’s meant for diagnostics only.

For a regular person, this translates into being able to pay off 100 by working hard, but owing 100 000 is a lot harder to work off, so they’ll need alternative solutions, like selling the car.

Financially speaking it’s the difference between a profit/loss statement and a balance sheet. Once you have enough money, P/L doesn’t matter in comparison to the balance.

Someone like Elon Musk stating that he doesn’t have any money to pay is playing on this. He’s all balance and no profit.

That’s not universal at all and completely wrong in large parts of the world.

In all the Nordic countries, who do ride bicycles very much, and in much of Europe, the right arm is used for signalling right turns, and the left arm for left turns and stopping/slowing. The stop sign is almost what you describe as a right turn: left arm up as an L and open palm. The left arm is used for stop, because it’s most visible when riding/driving on the right side.

Left turns are mostly used on small roads, because in larger intersections the cyclist should preferably make an “orientation stop” to make two straight crossings instead.

This signalling system was introduced many years ago when most bikes had pedal brakes, so there were no issues in braking while signalling with either arm. It can be slightly annoying for bikes with hand brakes only, since the front brake is on the left (which is also not a universal design). But it works, people do use it, and they do expect others to use it when it makes a difference. For instance, it would be considered rude to make a right turn without signalling if there are cars waiting to turn right, because the bicycle has the right of way it were to continue straight.

It’s also not the same for mopeds and motorcycles, because they should always use indicator lights, but in case it doesn’t have those and since the accelerator and front brake are on the right hand, they can only use the left arm to signal in those rare situations.

The only times I’ve seen cars using hand signals have been at veteran shows where the passenger would do the right turn signal.

These kits do come with step by step manuals, but one of the reasons to get one in the first place is to modify it. It makes sense to figure out what each part does, instead of following a manual.

Efficiency has increased,so you’re probably doing a whole lot of more tasks with the same time, but the bureaucracy still exists. It’s just a different kind of bureaucracy.

While we no longer need to stand in line to get a rubber stamp on a paper from some rude clerk just to pay a bill, we now need to download apps, keep the systems up to date, manage user accounts and input the data exactly how the app wants it. While the individual task might be somewhat easier than before, it is now expected that you do a whole lot more of these bureaucratic tasks yourself. All the tech bloat creeps up and makes every little task a little more difficult than before.

If it comes up the basement drain, then the obstruction is further down, and so you can’t really flush it from the drain and out. You need to find the sewer service well further out and flush it from there and in.

It’s likely a broken pipe taking in sand or branches, so flushing it won’t be a permanent fix. A plumber can probably fix it from outside too, so it doesn’t have to be very expensive.

You don’t need to waste your money on snakes and that kind of stuff. If a regular hose on full blast can’t loosen the obstruction from outside, then you need a plumber anyway.

I doubt that’s deliberate (it’s probably depending on some other task or shit that you don’t even intend to use), but it’s exactly the kind of bloat that turns people away from Windows.

Windows seems to work alright for my work pc, where I’m constantly logged into their cloud, newer switch users, logged in long enough daily to get all the updates and have IT to roll out stuff, so I hardly ever have issues there.

My personal computer is a different thing. I have several users, use it about once weekly, making it basically unbootable. As soon as I open the lid, Microsoft starts bugging me to do a shit load of things and download gigabytes of crap that Microsoft, and not I, needs me to do before I can even use it. More often than not I simply close the lid again.

It’s not unusual to meet people who don’t even have a pc these days. Most people can solve their daily stuff on any cell phone browser. I find it kinda amusing that Microsoft is pushing people that way.
