Exactly. Whats funny is facebook could have done this in like… 2010. Like I’m fairly certain I had “group pages” back then that were a very small number of people. But you’re right, the channel thing is crazy useful. Like my one group has 3 people, but we’ve got like 50 topics. It’s gotten to the point there are archives, ie: the “thanksgiving” channel moves from the “archive” group to “general” group around mid sept.

I’ve also been lucky enough to avoid having it be work related. Like I have slack for work, that notification noise is the devil, where as the discord notification noise means my buddy is posting pictures of his kid.

1000% agree. Like I use it for some spread out family (one server) and college friends. There’s <5 people in each. I think eventually forums will adopt the fediverse infrastructure. I’m on an old school forum for my vehicle, and it’s great. It’s direct out of 2010, it wouldn’t suprise me if those kind of sites brought in all the code that the fediverse runs off of. As a casual observer, that’s really what lemmy seems like to me: “what if 2005 internet, where people managed their own webpages, but it ran on a common architecture that made it easier to cross-link with other sites if you wanted?”

They do still exist, I have a specific but popular vehicle, and there’s a dedicated forum style site directly from 2011.

In a perfect world, that would be folded into the “fediverse” protocols, but like they’re already paying their own hosting etc. In the end that’s all reddit did: absorb some nominal hosting and IT for exposure. It made sense for hype niche communities, which is how reddit grew, but now that they’re killing control of the communities… Well… It turns out people were willing to pay for those servers back when they were expensive…

Discord is amazing for a step beyond group messages. I have no idea how it got into a roll as a “community tool”.

For anyone in that spot of being savvy-ish but having fellow users that finally got used to plex:

A work around is Xteve and owncast. I was successfully able to make an owncast broadcast into a “DVR channel”.

Its cluegy but it does work. My tech level in this stuff is spotty. I’m used to stacks of tech but more for physical control systems (NOT consumer facing). But I was able to get that to work.

Edit: little bit of clarification: Xteve will let you add DVR to your plex server. It’s possible to tie owncast into Xteve. That allows users to cue into a “DVR” channel which is kind of “simulcasting” whatever you’re pointing owncast to. In my case it was a screen share of sportsball, but it could be whatever.

I love this. I have a box I’ve been wanting to move to a family members place because they have fiber and I don’t. They’re heavy users of the plex server I have on there, so they’re happy to host it, but if I ever had issues around anything boot related I’d be down until I could physically get there.

This would also be awesome for troubleshooting some RasPi stuff where I kind of want the DE every now and then but mostly let it run headless.

There are some really cool things. Summarizing meetings or emails (at the low low cost of the last shred of your privacy), doing low stakes drafting to solve the “blank doc” problem etc. Advances in medical imaging are crazy cool as well, but that’s been bubbling since mid 2000s and we just called it “machine learning”.

Keep me posted! I’m very curious now. but yeah, without knowing anything about the internals, it’s possible the mechanisms needs some modicum of flow to regulate. If it’s a simple valve seat on a spring, I could see the downstream section reaching upstream pressure before spring drives it shut. The downstream assembly in this case is so small and totally sealed, so it wouldn’t take much for the air in it to be at supply pressure.

If that’s the case it’s nothing to worry about (probably). It’ll mean there’s a momentary spike to every time it’s opened, which could walk loose your barb fittings over time, but any flow distribution from the drip lines themselves will lessen that spike.

The hose test is the simplest “yup, there’s less flow and pressure” (if you wanted to be a real jackass about it you could make sure the hose is bent the same and at the same elevation in both cases, and track how far the arc travels). Another thing you could do is 1) open the upstream supply decently but not full blast (you want it open enough to ensure it’s not limiting flow it’s self but you won’t need the full flow it can provide) then 2) loosen the gauge to the point where it’s leaking decently.

You should a rapid but not instantaneous pressure drop to the 25psi of the regulator. Again it’s possible the mechanism requires flow, but in a perfect world you’d be able to tighten the gauge back up and then it would NOT rise back to supply pressure.

This all assumes it’s not simply malfunctional.

Looks like there’s some less than stellar reviews. It’s possible there’s a small action period of the valve leading to a pressurized pocket in the way you have the gage set up (that wouldn’t be there under normal flow operations). If you hook a hose up with and without the regulator, is there a difference in flow?

If you do see the expected difference in flow then you’ll just need to add a T for your indicator if you really want to keep an eye on pressure.

It gets even more complicated. Deer for instance, cause some property damage, sure but nothing like hogs obviously. HOWEVER, if there are to many, they’ll eat up all sorts of plants all winter that other animals and insects depend on in the spring. When state environmental authorities set bag limits, it’s not only to preserve a species, they’re also depending on hunters to remove a certain amount.

Snow geese were a huge problem for a while because they’d migrate far up north, and spend all summer picking apart vegetation on small islands. Vegititaiton that takes forever to grow up there, and was important to making sure some of those islands didn’t erode away… which they did. So near me while the daily bag limit for most birds was 2/day, for those snow geese it was like 25, with no limit on the season.

A good portion of what drives this are things like urban sprawl, etc, but there is no way to remove ourselves from the environment, which means we should do your best to maintain it. Most of these limits and programs are set by highly dedicated people who usually have advanced degrees in a field that pays very poorly. They do it because they care, so I tend to trust them.

I get hunting is unpalatable to a lot of people, but predation is an important part of how ecosystems balance. Left to their own devices these things certainly would stabilize, but the “new normal” may not be pleasant. Those plants excess deer population decimate over the winter may be important to an insect population, which is an important food source for a specific bird during it’s migration, that is important to balancing a beetle that decimates a specific tree species later in that birds migratory path or something. So that deer population becomes important to several other species and ecosystems across a broad range.

I’m not really qualified to talk about specifics, but it was really eye opening talking to an ornithologist friend of mine.

edit: another for instance on deer: When tag limits are placed, you usually get something like 2 bucks and maybe 8 does or something (depending on region, what the environmental authority saw doing surveys etc). This isn’t just to preserve bucks, it’s also that environmentally, it’s important to remove more does. Again my point being these hunting limits aren’t just permission to a hunt a species, but a request that a species is hunted.

… I had never thought about it this way. You’re totally correct though. I spend way more time fighting with my windows machine than I do my linux these days. I also just have a lot less patience fighting it because it’s always due to some dumb shit it didn’t need to be doing in the first place.

It doesnt taste like detergent for me I just don’t like it. It’s one of a very short list of tastes that just aren’t for me. On the other hand I love coriander.
