yeah, i didn’t want to get into the private tracker stuff, since i never used one before; i described pretty much the ressources you have as a “commoner”. I am aware that there are many specialized sources out there, where a lot more obscure material is available, but most of those take special effort to gain access to.

If it’s hard to find, first i try searching via jackett integration into qbittorrent. if unsuccessful, i go over to xrel.to and search for it there (its a pure information site, don’t ask for downloads there pls). You can verify if there has ever been a release of the specific title, and if, you can see the exact name of the release. if you can’t find it there too, you can be pretty sure that there never was a release, neither p2p nor scene. if it’s newer content, you can try to search later; if its older content, go buy it and upload it yourself (safely!) so the next person doesn’t have the same issue.

I don’t have any opinion on them regarding their performance. with proton there exist case files which show that they do not keep logs when not court ordered to do so (in the case i know about, they had to be court ordered to activate logs for login attempts to a specific mailbox). I haven’t heard anything bad about Mullvad either.

Windscribe seems to be fine, but they had at least one big misstep where a private key for OpenVPN was saved locally on a server that then was seized by authorities. PIA, on the other hand, had no issues hiring a criminally convicted CTO and merged with Kape Technologies, which was in the business of creating browser toolbars containing potientially unwanted programs.They have been audited in 2022 tho, so maybe they are alright now…

I use protonvpn, which has a very nice windows client and a not so nice, but functional Linux client (don’t know about MacOS). Port forwarding works either way, and you have the option of using wireguard or OpenVPN. Their website has a lot of tutorials.

I liked mullvad too, and they are cheaper, but I switched a few months ago because I got a deal for protonvpn and wanted to check out if port forwarding makes any difference for getting my share ratio back in order (and with a seedbox already in mind)

I had the same issue with my router, and i had to go into Advanced -> Socket Backlog Size and set it to 1 (default is 5) to completely fix it. Do you have a TP-Link router as well?

had that under linux too, because there’s still buffer to be written; but under linux i can at least check /proc/sys/vm/dirty_bytes to see how long it will take.

from what i understand, a decentralized bluesky is nothing for an enduser at all.

TL;DR: the cost for an enduser to run a bluesky instance will soon be prohibitive because of the amount of storage needed owed to its shared heap architecture. but what it does is to provide a “credible exit” - if users lose trust or the company shutters, there’s nothing in the way of another organisation picking up the mantle and continue from there on.

i currently have something similar with video output: if i turn off my monitor and turn it back on too fast (or if i disconnect/reconnect it), now there is no more picture, and i have to reboot per remote shell to get it back.

oh well, at least there’s an open issue in some github about it, so it will be fixed sometime in the future.

I know that you thought a lot about it, but you came to the wrong conclusions. But hey, since you seem still pretty grumpy about all of this and nearly a year has come and gone, maybe try again? This time users at least already have a working blocking feature, i think that wasn’t a thing yet last time. If a free alternative comes out of it i’m all for it.

This is booooooring.

To be honest, i am perfectly fine if the people who just want to flood their brain with content stay somewhere else. These people have a plethora of choices to get their dopamine flowing, and with pixelfed there is now one that grows pretty fast in the fediverse too.

It’s not an exclusive option.

But it creates a chilling effect, if the main community for a specific topic is under control of people who might not be as open or even just interested as needed. All discourse is ideological - a discussion about fascism will look very different depending on who has the last say regarding whats acceptable to say.

Mastodon’s issues, in my opinion, stem from something else - the name. Mastodon is a really crappy name. I tend to keep an open mind about most things, but i bounced off that name hard. I would choose a service named Bluesky over one named Mastodon 9 times out of ten even if it’s not really decentralized. Maybe now with the transfer to a new non-profit someone thinks of a snappier name that’s marketable.

The issue with the mirroring, at least how it was done, is that it was too much content for not enough users, creating the feeling of a deserted mall. If my comment disappears in a flood of posts, it’s no better than when my comment disappears in a flood of comments (like it does on reddit). (Lets forget about the part when one guy started copying entire threads including their users, which was not well thought out)

A way of combining communities into “multilemmys” would be great. I can understand why there’s pushback for separating topics from users. A Lemmy instance is not just a basket for specific topics, it’s a expression of ideology, and as such ideological arguments about the moderation in your proposed structure are guaranteed. It also would reduce comments with minority viewpoints to a minimum.

A slow and steady promotion of lemmy is the best that can happen - from what i learned in the last year a slow and steady influx of people is preferred by the majority, and not a flood of people that can’t be handled by our culture.

I like efficiency too, but some things do get lost when speeding things up too much.

It probably depends on what audience you are talking to. Privacy advocates, Anarchists, AI-Imagegen-Fans and digital pirates are probably a good fit for dbzer0, even with hexbear federated, and a LGBT-positive audience would feel at home on blahaj. So while promoting generalist instances per default is a good move, if the subreddit has a well-defined audience, a recommendation for a “specialized” instance might work better.
