  • I’m currently going though the books and from what I can tell, Harry especially takes issues with some teachers. He hates history and doesn’t understand divination but he’s fine with charms, defense against the dark arts and even potions once Snape no longer teaches it.

It’s just that during the lessons she describes, they usually have stuff like Quidditch or Voldemort stuff going on so they don’t really pay attention. They also don’t like doing homework so they let Hermione do it for them. And they still did pretty well on the OWLs so all in all, I think they were fine with class but by and large, she just doesn’t really write about classes that went their regular course.

  • I’m not sure but I would guess that there are ‘standards’ involved. Usually guys who go incel see a physical relationship as some sort of conquest.

They are more interesed in the act than the person. And for that act, they want it to be some sort of achievement so rather than getting to know someone they only go by shallow characteristics.

But usually incels are either physically unattractive or socially (very) awkward or a combination of both, making them unable to complete their conquest. Get rejected enough times and they’ll tell themselves the problem lies with women in general.

I dunno about femcels, mostly because I’ve never seen one irl. I imagine they are also physically unattractive and/or socially awkward so they would never be ‘targeted’ by incel types.

The guys I knew that fit the profile would also not be too keen on personal hygiene, healthy habits like proper food and drink and exercise and they dismissed pretty much anything mainstream society deems positive. Most of what they say or do comes from a negative place. I can imagine girls don’t really go for a guy like that, regardless if they are femcels or not.

  • The reason Windows works like this is because there are loads of people who try to run Windows 10 on super old weak Intel Celerons so they try all kinds of caching steps to make it manageable.

It would be better if Microsoft made some sort of lite edition, or immediately give you the option to turn this stuff off when configuring it. Problem is, Windows is used by a lot of people and most people have no clue how to configure an OS.

You have two options: either spend a lot on a computer that can run the OS it comes with without issue (Apple), or try your luck with a GNU/Linux distro, for which you might need to develop some knowledge about what you’re doing.

Or put up with Windows’s shit.

  • powercfg.exe /hibernate off

First step I take when faced with a new Windows installation.

And the 310GB sysfiles… I take it Windows is on a very large partition? Create a small, 120GB or so, partition on this disk. You’ll never use that much space. Windows expands if it is installed on a large partition with all sorts of cache.

Hate on Windows all you want, the path its headed it deserves it. Yet any OS will behave badly if it’s configured badly.

  • I think it’s pretty much impossible to fully get out of filter bubbles, but the only way to really get every view on everything is to be part of everything mainstream AND everything more underground. Personally, I don’t feel the need to associate with any other social media. I think toxicity differs from being exposed to a different point of view.

Reddit has had the problem for years that if you tried to make a point that slightly differed from the hive mind’s opinion, however eloquently you would put it, everyone would just pile on with their ‘akshually’ mentality and not even be open to any other viewpoint than their own.

And that’s toxicity without even mentioning folks that would just say ‘no’ followed by hateful language.

I feel Lemmy is a far kinder, more balanced community where you can have a polite discussion about stuff. And OP is right, if a certain instance shows its users can’t behave or have such different views than your own, you can just make them go away and enjoy the rest of Lemmy.

I just hope those users don’t defederate from the rest of us so at some point they will have a more nuanced view of things.
