Oh yeah, I’m very much aware of where I asked. Haha. I see an opportunity where I can at least advocate for the FOSS options, so I’m trying to learn what those are and how they compare to other solutions before I make any suggestions to the decision makers.

I was recently laid off, and have been wanting to explore some personal self hosting projects, plus I’m hoping to make a bit of a career pivot, so my interest is coming from a variety of motivations.

I only just discovered this problem a few days ago, so I don’t really know yet. We definitely need to be able to track a number of details about the animals including source, outcome, medical records, etc. I think having a way to keep track of “employees” (we’re 100% volunteer run), “customers” (finders and adopters), and finances is also pretty important, and hopefully in a way that doesn’t require a lot of duplicate entries due to multiple fragmented systems.

There’s quite a few (mostly proprietary) systems out there specifically designed for shelters, so I suspect something like that might be the best option for the current issue, but looking at Odoo might be relevant to my professional development in general, as I was recently laid off, and hoping to pivot a bit from the general administrative work I had previously been doing.

Thanks! Looks interesting. Might be a bit awkward to fit the data types, but I’m definitely curious to play with it and see how it compares to the other ERPs I’ve experienced, which were also clunky, even with more typical business data.

Thank you! This particular issue is something that I only started to become aware of a few days ago, so I’m still trying to learn more before pushing for any big changes. I don’t know that self hosting is even the right solution for our group, so I’m glad to see that they also offer a hosted option, although the self hosted option seems like a great way for me to test it out.

I have no clue yet if an open source solution exists, but I’m just getting started volunteering with a local animal rescue, and they definitely need a better solution for records management.

I randomly tried using Jellyfin today instead of Plex, but Jellyfin kept crashing my browser and logging me out, so I wasn’t in the mood to troubleshoot, so I just gave up and went back to Plex.

In the past, I’ve been annoyed that Jellyfin didn’t seem to have an option to sort media by “Last Episode Date Added”, nor did it seem to have a way to build a queue of episodes from multiple different shows. I think I was also having trouble figuring out how to add multiple sources… I have my “long term” library on a local hard drive, plus anything “new” on a seedbox.

I theoretically want to fully switch over eventually, but so far, Plex is still good enough for my use case.

That’s so weird. I’ve been using Plex for years and had never heard of “Passout Protection” until looking it up just now, nor does it ever stop playback on its own for me unless it reaches the end of the queue. I’m using the free version via web browser on my computer. Maybe it’s a setting that only affects apps? Continuous playback on Plex is one of the reasons why I’ve always preferred it over Netflix, etc.

What instance are you using? How are you accessing it (browser, app, etc.)?

Yeah, I’m also having trouble finding the global feed on the official app, but it is available on the Pixelix app if you click the house icon at the bottom, then you can choose between Home, Local, and Global feeds at the top.

Huh. Are you using the web browser or an app? Oddly, when I browse my gram.social home feed via the web browser, it’s mostly (but not exclusively) just the default accounts in my feed, but when I browse via the Pixelfed, PixelDroid, or Pixelix apps, I’m seeing lots of posts coming from many other servers, including Mastodon servers.

Which server did you join? I’ve been following lots of hashtags (including cats), so my feed there is pretty active. Just hoping some IRL friends and family will join soon so I have those sort of accounts to follow and share with.

I don’t clear the timer because my +30 sec button will only work to start the microwave if there’s time left on the timer. If there’s no time left on the timer, the +30 button is useless until I punch something in.

Yes, when I used to order grocery delivery via Amazon Fresh, they always came in paper bags. And I was living in a pretty rainy city at the time, but never had any issues with the bags.

I’ve used Windows since I can remember… at least since Windows 95, then probably early 2000’s, added OSX into the mix. I currently use an old Mac Mini as my Plex machine, and the computer provided by my employer runs Windows.

My “journey” began around 2015 on an old Dell laptop that I set up to dual boot Windows and Linux. I tried 2 or 3 distros, one of which was probably Ubuntu, before settling on Mint. I remember having enough minor issues with Mint that I kept booting back to Windows, and eventually stopped booting to Mint at all.

Then one day, I have no clue what I was trying to do, but I was confident that I knew what I was doing, so I just went for it without pulling up the instructions. Welp, I ended up deleting my bootloader, or something like that, and now couldn’t boot to any OS. I tried using my parents’ Mac to create a bootable USB, but that wasn’t working. I wound up buying and returning a random open box laptop from Best Buy just so I could create a functional bootable USB. I also found help from a very kind internet stranger who walked me through the process to fix my bootloader. They happened to only use Arch btw, so that’s what we used to get my laptop fixed.

That whole drama really scared me away from fiddling with it for a while, then I just got busy and had no motivation. That laptop is collecting dust and still dual boots Windows (7?) and headless Arch. I’m thinking of fiddling around with Linux again, but most definitely need something more noobie friendly than Arch without a DE.

Any idea how things might be handled when things get crossposted? Will replies on the crossposted threads also become comments on their sites? Or only replies to the original post?

It was years ago, so my memory might not be perfect, but I had something that kinda did that. I think it was an Xposed module called GravityBox, and there was an option to limit repeat notifications. I had set a cool down period of probably 1 minute, meaning if I received multiple messages within 60 seconds, it would only notify once, but if I received another message 60+ seconds after the first, it would ding again. I’m pretty sure that the cool down period was customizable per app too. Damn, I miss that.
