  • I was watching Rob and Rylan’s Grand Tour, where they visited Florence, and met the woman who explored this painting, which Artemisia, one of the only known women artists of the renaissance (and first woman to be admitted to the Accademia di Arte del Disegno), did as a nude self portrait 4 years after she was brutally raped and then tortured as punishment for “being a slut”.

The establishment then covering her up feels like just another patriarchal slap in the face.

Seeing the painting as close as we can get to how she intended it to be was unexpectedly emotional, and I thought it was well worth sharing.

  • Here from /all, don’t own a 3D printer, but if I did, yes I absolutely would lol

Maybe change it up with some more modern/abstract/famous faces though, the Greek statue look would get old fast… But planters are so expensive for what they are, being able to print my own would really feed my failed plant addiction (I’m no good at actually keeping them alive but I can’t stop buying more) 😂

  • No, what there has been is an increase in an already prevalent phenomenon (see: mass shooters) of blaming mental illness and/or personality disorders for abusive, violent, and flat out fascistic actions, when they don’t actually cause those, it’s just so much easier to do than to think more deeply and/or critically about the systems and structures that don’t only enable, but encourage such behaviour, especially in those with privilege and power (because actually mentally ill people are much more likely to be victims of violence and other abuse, than perpetrate it).

Using diagnosable conditions as shorthand for “abusive” or “toxic” or “harmful” or “violent” or “racist” or whatever else, is ableism. It deepens already existing and harmful stigmas, prevents people from seeking help and support and being open about their struggles, and actually puts them at greater risk of further abuse just for being diagnosed the way they are, even if they’ve never hurt a fly.

    In short:

“Are you saying that murderers are right in the head??”
No there’s definitely something wrong with someone’s way of thinking if they can justify killing innocent people, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that they have a mental illness.
Extremist beliefs isn’t a mental illness.
    Bigotry isn’t a mental illness.
    Entitlement isn’t a mental illness.
    Hate isn’t a mental illness.
Having a dysfunctional moral compass isn’t a mental illness.
We need to stop categorizing all these things as some undefinable “mental illness” and start looking at what we do as a society to develop and justify these things to a degree where people use them to justify killing.
    Yes!
Dehumanization is something you Have to look for. If the murderer doesn’t see the person they killed as a person, then mental illness is probably not the main factor there.
Plenty of people murder women, poc, lgbt people, people of other religions etc. because they don’t see them as people.
Think about genocides - they aren’t perpetrated by big group of people/a government who all got mentally ill together the same way at the same time somehow, they just didn’t consider what they did murder because they didn’t see the victims as people.

  • but in the end any kind of interaction with these systems is like frequenting a business where you know it is used as a front for money-laundering by criminal enterprises.

So most large corporations and banks then…

Look, there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, I made it very clear I don’t support holding on to any crypto, just using it to circumvent oppressive systems, focusing on rejecting a tool (and one that can be specifically extremely useful in enabling revolutionary movements) because you don’t like how others use it, instead of a system where any and all consumptions involves multiple levels of unethical practices, seems like completely missing the point to me. ¯\(ツ)

  • I’m an anarcho-communist, so the future I would like has no money in it, virtual or otherwise, but we aren’t there yet, and as long as we live under capitalism, I see no issue with making use of tools there to create parallel systems to those of the existing institution, to not only undermine them, but create a secondary system independent of the state to rely on (aka dual power).

It should be expected that capitalists would co-opt these tools, but that doesn’t make our use of them less valid (or theirs desirable).

Them turning it in to an investment doesn’t mean you do - if you’re not buying (or mining) it to accumulate it, all it is is a token that allows you (if done correctly) to move money privately and securely, without capitalists knowing who is involved nor taking a cut or involving the authorities. I’m sure you can think for yourself of reasons why this would be beneficial for anarchists and other radical and revolutionary groups and individuals around the world, and the networks they create.

I don’t know the podcast you’ve mentioned, but I agree that marketing crypto for profit definitely isn’t punk in any way shape or form, but it’s the marketing for profit part you should be taking issue with, not the tool they happen to be using to make the profit with (AI being a perfect example of another tool that can be used to either free or enslave us, dependent on who is in control, not on the tool itself).
