If they make their own publicity out of it, that indicates what they are getting is goodwill, essentially at no cost. I don’t think that’s a bad thing ethnically or from a business point of view.
They could also be saving minor costs on waste management, disposal, etc. I’m sure they don’t remove organics from plastic before chucking it away, so they’re likely paying for that process by the tonne.
Being able to just browse without signup and see largely federated content would pull in a lot of people. I am new to federated concepts, but would a generic, non-profit “home page” that’s browseable without signup is possible? Apps like Voyager could dump newbies into that until they want to post/interact?
Agreed, you could pick your own algorithm(s) to follow just like hashtags, maybe just a “follow this hashtag and similar engagement posts”. It might be an easier transition from the imposed monolithic algorithm God that meta/google impose if people are in control of how the app feeds them.
Probably has zero insulation and needs the heat on constantly. I also doubt that it has separate water metering so they’re likely paying the landlord’s bills too.
