I’m very close to blocking this account. I think I might have a lot of sympathy for OPs positions, but it’s impossible to know, because they never legitimately make an argument or point. Just pseudoedgy shit like this “showerthought”.

When you sound like a dumb edgy teen, or a lazy troll, most people are not going to engage positively. If you actually care about these issues your doing a fuckin awful job of promoting your position. Show that you understand the issue, and the pov of the other side, and then discuss what needs to change. If you’re just a troll, then at least mix it up a little. Severely lacking in teh lulz.

Yeah, I think the mean prank vibe sucks (obvs, ymmv) but the ‘fake news’ aspect was a positive. Like the original and sadly long lost art of og trolling, the purpose was to remind everyone that you cannot believe everything you read, and you should not suddly react to something just because you read it in a newspaper. For sure. But most people aren’t well known enough to have strangers murder them. If someone wanted to put a bomb in my house they could, I don’t have any security or cameras, I don’t even lock the door that often. But why would they care?

But yeah, it’s wouldn’t just be the rich, anyone famous enough to be known and awful (or just unlucky) enough to make someone genuinely wish them dead would be at risk. ‘ordinary’ people rarely have the power or influence to piss someone off enough to murder them. Although I’m sure the number of mysterious deaths of neighbours and exlovers etc would go up.

I don’t think immigration borders would be the main issue. It’s pretty easy to get into most countries for the price of a return plane ticket, and then you just don’t leave. Unless teleportation was much cheaper and more convenient it wouldn’t change much. I think it would have an impact on customs and smuggling. Pretty easy to bring anything to anywhere without ant chance of interception.

But the biggest shift would be security. Presuming anyone could just make anything appear anywhere, I think the rich and powerful would be very afraid. If teleporting a homemade bomb into someone’s palatial mcmansion was as easy as 3d printing a gun then people wouldn’t have to even go full Luigi to terrorise those people. Remember the anthrax scare? Posting poison is one thing, but just making clouds of it appear in bedrooms or offices with destinctive oval-shapes, would be quite a different level.

Yeah, seen something like this in the UK. You take a scanner and scan everything as you shop, then just lay the bill as you exit. To begin with they even offered a discount I think. For a long time lots of European music was mostly thorough-composed, where there was little to no repitition. Madrigals (the popular music of the renaissance) were mostly like this, the melody would follow it’s own journey with no chorus / verse or other repetitive structure. I might be remembering wrong, but I think it was early baroque and Monteverdi’s Orfeo that popularised repeating structures, and turns out people love them. If you back and listen to some madrigals, it’s a very different approach to music. (also, there was folks music and all sorts of other traditions, which used more repeating patterns, that seem more familiar to us.)

Some public schools and so-called ‘experts’ try to tell us the earth and other planets orbit around the sun. But anyone can see with the naked eye that the planets don’t change brightness, even though their distance from the earth would vary vastly under this crazy heliocentric model! Fake science!

It absolutely isn’t, and it’s for sure off-topic, but I glad it was posted here rather than somewhere more specialised. People in assistive tech might already know about this sort of thing. I think it’s cool to imagine how different social media would be if we could actually hear each other’s voices, and all the general information about age, background, confidence and humour that the voice can convey. There’d probably be less misunderstandings and trolling, but when it happened it would probably hurt more.

But maybe op could change the title to an actual thought, “social media might be less awful if we heard each other’s voices” or whatever.

Because that’s the logical fallacy of Denying the Antecedent . If “it’s raining” then “the sidewalk is wet”. Knowing that it’s raining tells us something about the sidewalk, it’s not dry, it’s wet. And knowing the sidewalk is dry tells us something, it can’t be raining (because if it was, the sidewalk would be wet).

But knowing “it is not raining” doesn’t tell us about the sidewalk (it could be dry, it could be wet, maybe it rained earlier, maybe a dog peed on it). And similarly knowing the sidewalk is wet doesn’t tell us anything about the rain.

So even if “mo money causes mo problems” all that tells us is that someone with mo money will not be problem free. People with no money might also have mo problems, the syllogism doesn’t tell us about that.

Spot on with “lieing about having your shit together”, I’m in my 40s and in academia and almost everyone is “just pretending” to be a high functioning adult.

But you don’t need to spend your life in front of a computer. You can do all sorts of shit. But people like economic security and that makes “college > soul destroying job” seem appealing. But life can be all sorts of things, as long as you realise you’re in control of the choices not the results.

There’s a well established trope that at every age, people think there life is about to settle down and stop being as open and free. I was defintely the kind of person who felt that turning 21 was becoming ancient and tbat life was basically over. But each decade has been completely different and often wild, I’ve done lots of different things, lived in different places and even now I’m married and have a house and all the more “settled” things, I’m confident the last few decades will also be varied and interesting.

I think ‘most’ is hyperbole for dramatic effect / increased engagement. “more files than you might think are actually following the zip file structure” isn’t as punchy.
