I’m not a dev/programmer, but does the version number starting with a zero suggest that Lemmy is still in a pre-release state? Like alpha or beta or something? If so, what needs to happen before it gets to version 1.0? Just curious! From my layperson’s perspective, Lemmy runs great and I have no complaints about it, so I’m not sure what v.1.0 would look like. Or maybe it’s all internal stuff that I’ll never notice anyway?

I love that Linux exists, but I really don’t appreciate the bullshit PR speak about how regular users can switch from Windows with little-to-no friction. The second something doesn’t work as expected, even a minor thing, they’ll be at a complete loss about how to even investigate the issue, let alone correct it. Windows competency doesn’t transfer to Linux for even the most basic under-the-hood stuff. The less honest you are about that, the fewer people will try Linux a second time, and the more people will write off the entire endeavour as being the domain of computer experts/enthusiasts.

It’s the path of least resistance to achieve Musklessness. The second two of the positives you listed are actually negatives to the average Joe. Choice paralysis, overwhelming number of apps and servers, these are things that put people off even trying, especially if there are easier-to-use alternatives that are familiar and instant.

Mastodon is great, but it’s not quite there yet in terms of convenience. Too much copying and pasting and clicking through to different instances in order to read old posts etc. It needs to be more cohesive in a way that doesn’t require constantly leaving your timeline or going into the settings.

It’s also the case that the Twitter diaspora who are famous tend to choose BlueSky, and that brings a lot of people along with them.

And it’s also the case that Mastodon doesn’t have much of a marketing campaign outside of word-of-mouth, whereas BlueSky does.

AIMP ^{[Windows/Android]} has been my Winamp replacement for ~15 years. I’ve never found a player that comes close to rivalling it.

P.S. I have no idea what the licence is for AIMP, I just know it’s free and is excellent. You don’t need Winamp.

What I find most difficult to grasp about this theory is that a pyramid made of blocks is hardly the sort of “aliens was here” construction one would expect from a race of creatures that had the technology to travel between star systems, presumably faster than the speed of light, or at least utilising wormholes or something. Like, how about you give us some of that new physics and maybe sans the goofy-ass ordered piles of rubble that serve no purpose and teach us fuck-all?

Forensic scientist Sue Black says that there’s no such thing as “forensic” science. It’s just science, the “forensic” part just means the science is being brought into the courtroom. People (from watching movies/TV) think the science conducted in such contexts is somehow different or more complex than that done in other contexts. It’s all the same processes and skills and expertise.

Anhedonia, i.e. the inability to feel pleasure. It’s like trying to fill a bucket with water that has a hole in the bottom, letting the water out at the same speed it goes in. Nothing you can do about it. I think this might be where the recklessness comes from; desperation to get any kind of sensation from something. You need to go to extreme lengths to get the proverbial dial to move a millimetre. So you take risks and reach for danger and generally inappropriate behaviour.

Greatly appreciate the 2FA improvement! I can finally enable it now without locking myself out, which happened every time I tried to enable it previously.

However, in true Fediverse fashion, they’ve made it 122.6% more complicated than it needs to be. Why contain all of the relevant information in a button pointing to a highly specific protocol? I had to manually copy and paste the button’s URL into Notepad++ and cut the parts I needed from it. Why not just give the secret or a QR code like literally every other implementation of 2FA that has ever existed? I’ve never seen such a button before on any other website when I wanted to switch on 2FA, even on Mastodon they use a QR code and/or the secret key.

And no backup codes? 🤔

I sound like a complainy complainer, but I’m genuinely happy/grateful I could enable 2FA. I’m just a n00b who worries about people even n00bier than I am trying to figure it out.
